New Director of Multilingual Learners

On Thursday, June 2, 2022, during the regularly scheduled board meeting, West Chicago Elementary School District 33’s Board of Education announced that it had selected Ms. Rubi Ortiz as the new Director of Multilingual Learners beginning July 1, 2022.

Ms. Ortiz currently serves as the Director of EL Services for Lyons School District 103, joining District 103 in 2018. During her time at District 103, she has established a strong foundation for the EL Department. She has been awarded multiple grants based on improvements in ACCESS Scores, ACCESS exit rates, and English Proficiency Scores.

Ms. Ortiz began her 15 years in education as a Teach for America Corps Member and was placed in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) on the West side in the Austin community.  She taught English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Spanish for over a decade in Austin, Archer Heights, Humboldt Park, and the Grand Crossing communities in CPS. She last served as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Coordinator at Edwards Elementary. Under her leadership, the ELA scores in the middle school scores improved significantly and moved out of the needs improvement category.  Ms. Ortiz made a significant contribution to advancing the school from a 2+ to a 1+ (the highest rating in CPS).

Ms. Ortiz received a Bachelor of Arts degree from North Central College in Psychology.  In 2014, she earned a Master’s of Education from the University of Phoenix in Educational Leadership and Administration. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Educational Leadership at National Louis University.

Ms. Ortiz feels incredibly blessed to have been chosen for this role and have the opportunity to join the fantastic D33 staff and be able to support its students and families.
