AVID is a high school course option. AVID stands for, Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID focuses on students who are “underserved,” not “underperforming.” The students in AVID typically are the first in their families to attend college, may come from
families in poverty, and lack the necessary knowledge needed to even begin applying for college. Typically these
students are average to above-average performing, who with a little support can excel in Honors and Advanced
Placement classes. This support includes note taking, test preparation, organization, and study strategies. All of this
support strongly focuses on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR). AVID is the only
program at our school that focuses specifically on helping these “middle-ground” students rise to the next level.
