Our Schools

John B. Turner School opened in 1953 and was named after Turner, a railroad executive for the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad. He was an early benefactor of the community and donated land for one of the first schools. The second plat of land (which would eventually become West Chicago) was called Turner in honor of his contributions.

Gary School was constructed in 1955 and was named for the Gary family, early Winfield Township settlers. Gary's Mill, a pioneer settlement, took its name from the sawmill (erected by the 3 Gary brothers in 1837) which served as the center of the once prosperous community. The settlement grew to include a one room school house built 1851, Gary's Mill School.

Leman Middle School is the new name for the West Chicago Junior High, built in 1962. This change reflects a new organization of the school and represents a philosophy of education which addresses not only the academic, but the social, psychological, and emotional needs of adolescents.

Indian Knoll School opened in 1967. It is located in an area of prehistoric Native American activity. Archeological digs in the nearby Winfield Mounds have uncovered arrowheads and stone artifacts. This area has a tradition of being a favorite stopping place of the Indians.

Pioneer School opened in 1971. It was named after the Pioneer, one of the first three locomotive engines owned by the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, the first railroad operation in Illinois. It first arrived in this area in 1849. The Pioneer is now on permanents exhibit at the Chicago Historical Museum.

Arvilla Currier School opened at the start of 1994 school year. It is located near the old Gary's Mill School site. It is named after Arvilla Currier, who was one of the first teachers in what would become West Chicago. She taught at Gary's Mill School in 1854.

Charles T. Wegner School opened at the start of the 1994 school year. It is named after Wegner, the past president of the Jel Sert Corporation located in West Chicago. The Wegner family has been very supportive of our school district and community for many years.
